Javascript 101

• Introduction

  In 1993, Mosaic, the first popular web browser, came into existence. In the year 1994, Netscape was founded by Marc Andreessen. He realized that the web needed to become more dynamic. Thus, a 'glue language' was believed to be provided to HTML to make web designing easy for designers and part-time programmers. Consequently, in 1995, the company recruited Brendan Eich intending to implement and embed Scheme programming language to the browser.

  
  

  But, before Brendan could start, the company merged with Sun Microsystems for adding Java into its Navigator so that it could compete with Microsoft over the web technologies and platforms. Now, two languages were there: Java and the scripting language. Further, Netscape decided to give a similar name to the scripting language as Java's. It led to 'Javascript'. Finally, in May 1995, Marc Andreessen coined the first code of Javascript named 'Mocha'. Later, the marketing team replaced the name with 'LiveScript'. But, due to trademark reasons and certain other reasons, in December 1995, the language was finally renamed to 'JavaScript'. From then, JavaScript came into existence.

   

• Javascript dev

  Web devs look at the big picture and analyze the current and future needs of their project before writing a single line of code. Based on that, they choose tools and libraries that will help them code faster and avoid repetitive, manual tasks.

  
  

  
  

  Then, they build the core folder structure, install all the dependencies and configure the tools to perform the desired actions. All this preparatory work takes time, so in order to avoid going through the same project again and again, developers use boiler plates or starter kits.

  
  

  
  

  These are “pre-made” packages that include the minimum amount of files and dependencies needed for a front end project, regardless of what you’re building.

  
  

  
  

  So in this tutorial we’ll go through the entire process of creating a front end starter kit (a JavaScript development environment), and I’ll explain the why and how of every step.

  
  

  At the end of the article, you should be able to set up your own JS dev environment and deploy your first project to production.

• Javascript Data types

  JavaScript Data-types

  One of the most fundamental characteristics of a programming language is the set of data types it supports. These are the type of values that can be represented and manipulated in a programming language.

  JavaScript also defines two trivial data types, null and undefined, each of which defines only a single value. In addition to these primitive data types, JavaScript supports a composite data type known as object. We will cover objects in detail in a separate chapter.

  
  

  Note − JavaScript does not make a distinction between integer values and floating-point values. All numbers in JavaScript are represented as floating-point values. JavaScript represents numbers using the 64-bit floating-point format defined by the IEEE 754 standard. Types of Data-types

  There are two types of Data Types in JavaScript:

  
  

  1.Primitive data type

  2.Non-Primitive data type

  
  

  JavaScript is a dynamic language, i.e. there is no need to specify the 'type' of the variable because it is dynamically(automatically) used by JavaScript engine. You just need to use var to specify the data type. It can hold any type of values such as numbers, strings, Boolean, etc.

  An array is a collection of multiple values in single a variable. Each value (also called an element) has a numeric position, known as its index, and it may contain data of any data type. The array index starts from 0, so that the first array element is arr.
